P0351: Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

What P0351 tells you, and what it does not

The computer commands ignition coil A, typically the coil on cylinder 1, to build and release spark at the correct moment and monitors its primary circuit for the expected electrical response. This code sets when that specific coil's circuit does not behave as commanded, which the computer can isolate to that coil because each one has its own driver line on coil-on-plug systems. It points to a wiring, connector or coil problem local to that cylinder.

The code sits in the ignition coil primary circuit area and is reported by the comprehensive component monitor. It names the circuit or the condition where the computer saw a reading outside its expected range. It does not name a failed part, and several genuinely different faults set this same code, which is the whole reason the causes below are ordered rather than listed.

What causes P0351?

The causes below are ordered by how often they turn out to be the answer, cheapest and most common first. That order matters more than the list itself: the expensive component named in the code text is very rarely the first thing to replace, and working down from the top is what stops a ignition coil primary circuit fault becoming an expensive guess.

Failed ignition coil on that cylinder is the one to rule out before anything else. Coil-on-plug coils fail individually and are the most common cause of a single coil circuit code.

Working out which cause it is

Start with freeze frame. RPM and load at the fault show whether the coil only fails under higher spark demand. That snapshot is taken at the instant the code set, and it is the single most useful piece of evidence you have, which is also why clearing the code before reading it is such a costly habit.

This code is diagnosed by watching values change rather than by reading the number again, so the tool has to stream live data and hold freeze frame. Live per-cylinder misfire counts confirm the coil circuit fault correlates with actual misfire events on that cylinder.

• 1. Failed ignition coil on that cylinder: Coil-on-plug coils fail individually and are the most common cause of a single coil circuit code.
• 2. Corroded or unplugged connector at that coil: These connectors sit right on top of the engine where heat cycles them constantly.
• 3. Cracked coil boot letting spark leak to ground instead of the plug: Oil contamination or age cracks the rubber boot over time.
• 4. Chafed wiring between the computer and that coil: A wire that rubs against a valve cover or bracket wears through with age.
• 5. Worn spark plug in that cylinder increasing the load on the coil: A plug with an oversized gap makes the coil work harder and can push a marginal coil into failure.

What P0351 means for driving the car

Short trips only, since a misfiring coil circuit genuinely damages the catalytic converter within minutes if driven far under load.

This is a severity 3 of 4 code, which means continuing to drive normally risks damage that costs considerably more than the repair in front of you. Treat the lamp as an instruction rather than a notification.

What does it cost to ignore P0351?

A failing coil on one cylinder dumps unburned fuel into the exhaust every time it misfires, which overheats and can destroy the catalytic converter.

There is also the diagnostic cost of waiting. Freeze frame data, pending code history and the readiness monitor state all describe the fault as it was when it set, and all of it is lost the moment somebody clears the code to make the lamp go out.
